Expert reviews how a healthy diet can help reduce risk of osteoporosis

June 6, 2011 — One of BistroMD's expert dietitians is reviewing the significant impacts a healthy diet can have on osteoporosis risk and bone health.

Christy Shatlock, MS/RD, is a registered dietitian and one of the lead dietitians for BistroMD, the number one physician-designed, chef-prepared diet meal delivery company in the nation.

"A healthy diet balanced with protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats can actually reduce your risk of developing bone conditions, like osteoporosis," says Shatlock. "These essential nutrients actually promote the transfer of calcium to your bones, which helps you sustain a stronger bone structure."

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects nearly 10 million Americans. In addition to these alarming statistics, it's also estimated that 25 million people in this country suffer from low bone mass.

"Osteoporosis is basically a disease of the bones," says Shatlock. "A person with osteoporosis has less bone mass and abnormal bone tissue than someone who doesn't. This makes bones less dense, which makes bones weaker and more susceptible to breaks and

fractures."

One of the main causes of osteoporosis is a lack of calcium and vitamin D. Calcium is essentially the building block of bone, and vitamin D assists in the transport of calcium to other parts of your body that need it.

"Even if you aren't over the age of 50, eating the right foods can significantly help reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis and bone loss as you age," says Shatlock. "Without the proper nutrition from a healthy diet, your bone health could decline dramatically."

Each meal available from BistroMD is balanced with the proper portions of nutrients to promote healthy weight loss. Every meal delivered also provides you with an essential amount of calcium and vitamin D that you need daily.

"You can get an adequate amount of calcium and vitamin D daily if you eat the right kind of foods through a healthy diet," says Shatlock. "I have worked closely with Dr. Cederquist to make sure that every meal available from BistroMD promotes effective weight loss, but doesn't lack essential nutrients like calcium and vitamin D."
