Spam control
Spam filters are essential to controlling the amount of unwanted e-mails that flood your e-mailbox. But spam filters are not enough.
InformationWeek Daily, an e-newsletter of InformationWeek, suggests these tips to rid yourself of annoying, and possibly harmful, spam:
• Fool spam programs. Spammers use special programs to gather e-mails from forums, newsgroups, and other public places.
When you post to sites, obscure your e-mail address by inserting something into it. For example: If your e-mail address is xyz@yahoo.com, change it to xyz@yah[delete_this]oo.com or type in “xyz at yahoo
dot com.”
• Don’t reply. Not even to get yourself off a spam list. Replying verifies to the sender that it is sending to a real address.
• Use Web forms. Instead of putting your e-mail address on your Web site, use a form instead.
• Never open spam. Opening it can send you to a Web site that verifies your e-mail address. The result? More spam.
