More insights on DC – fitness club ventures

Joint ventures between chiropractic and fitness centers are popping up all over the country. William M. Ferro, DC, who owns and operates seven chiropractic fitness centers within health clubs, discussed with Chiropractic Economics three points concerning the growing interest in this type of venture, why some fail, and what the secret of success might be.

CE: Why is the interest in “marrying” chiropractic with fitness growing?

Ferro: The interest lies in rent revenue for health clubs, which are suffering from increased competition. Club owners see the retention of members and the increased revenue of personal training directed by a doctor. Members love it, too!

CE: Why do some ventures between chiropractors and fitness centers fail?

Ferro: There is often a disconnect between the health-club owner and the chiropractic office. The doctor often times just sits around waiting for people with neck pain or sciatica to walk into their office. A brochure at the front counter will not make people run into your office. You have to get out there and work with people.

CE: What is the secret to succeeding in a partnership or cooperative arrangement with a fitness center?

Ferro: What works is becoming the right hand person of the health-club owner. You need to watch their business like it is your own, because essentially it is. If the club does well, so do you.
