What’s in a practice manual

One thing every new practice needs is a practice manual, but what is it? It is a document that contains information about running the practice and managing employees. The main sections of the practice manual should be:

• Introduction. This section describes the mission and philosophy of the practice. It also includes a place for each employee to sign, stating he or she has read the manual and is aware of the requirements of the position.

• Employee benefits. This section describes the eligibility and terms for each benefit.

• Employee policies and procedures. A section on policies and procedures includes policies on absenteeism, discipline, dress code, use of drugs and alcohol, and a host of others.

• Office procedures. This section is a work-in-progress as you develop procedures on collections, first visits, daily opening and closing of the clinic, billing, and others.
