1976 — The United States vetos a U.N. resolution condemning Israeli policies in occupied territories, as well as a resolution that called for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Also that year:

_ Lyme arthritis, a new infectious form of arthritis, is discovered near Lyme, Conn. The disease is thought to spread through insects, who carry the virus and transfer it to humans when they bite.

_ In the biggest bank robbery in history, thieves steal an estimated $10-15 million in cash and valuables from a bank in Nice, France.
