1970 — The National Weather Service (NWS) replaces the Weather Bureau. NWS is part of the newly-created National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Elsewhere that year:

_ Japan becomes the fourth country with space exploration capabilities with the launch of the satellite Osumi I.

_ In Guatemala, archeologists unearth a 5-foot statue estimated to date from 700-300 BC.
