Armstrong becomes the first man on the moon in 1969.
While Michael Collins pilots Apollo 11 in orbit around
the Moon, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin fly the Lunar
Module to the surface where they remain for more than
21 hours. Armstrong utters the first words from the
Moon, “It’s one small step for man, one
giant leap for mankind.” Also that year:
- Woodstock
Music and Art Fair, a three-day rock concert, is
held near Bethel, N.Y. An estimated 400,000 people
attended.
- The
United States – North Vietnamese peace talks
in Paris are expanded to include the Viet Cong and
the South Vietnamese government. President Nixon
announces a withdrawal of troops from Vietnam.
- The
Department of Agriculture halts the use of DDT in
residential areas. It was banned completely in 1971.

President De Gaulle of France resigns and Georges
Pompidou is elected president of France.
- Yasir
Arafat, leader of Al Fatah, becomes head of the
Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
- Robert
Guccione, publisher, founds Penthouse magazine.
- Pants
suits become acceptable for everyday wear by women.
- The
Concorde, an Anglo-French supersonic aircraft,
makes its first test flight.
