Resistance to the end of segregation

A group of southern Congressmen call on states to resist “by all lawful means” the Supreme Court ruling against segregation in public schools. Virginia challenges the ruling, amending its laws to permit public funds for private schools. A federal court in Louisiana nullifies the state’s laws opposing ruling. Also that year:

_ Movies and movie stars are allowed to appear on television for the first time.

_ The palace of Emperor Diocletian (Roman emperor A.D. 285-305) is excavated at Split, Yugoslavia.
