Color television

1950 — The FCC licenses CBS for color television broadcasts. RCA objects, claiming that its system is more sophisticated and effective than that of CBS. Elsewhere that year:

  • Chiropractors in the United States number 13,084, according to the U.S. Census;
  • Isaac Asimov, science fiction author, publishes Pebble in the Sky and I, Robot;
  • The longest vehicular tunnel, the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel in New York City, opens to traffic;
  • The Defense Production Act grants the President emergency powers over wages and prices;
