1944 — The Dumbarton Oaks Conference among
delegates from the United States, the U.S.S.R. and
the British Commonwealth proposes a permanent international
peace organization called the United Nations.
Also that year:
- Congress passes the G.I. Bill, which makes benefits
available to World War II veterans who planned to
study chiropractic.
- Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research
(FCER) is established; with that, the profession
has a primary source of funding.
- U.S. troops establish beachheads at Utah Beach
and Omaha Beach during the Allied invasion of Western
Europe, nicknamed D-Day. The invasion in Normandy,
France includes about 156,000 British, Canadian
and U.S. troops. Allied tanks drive through German
defenses and underground French forces rise against
the Germans.
- German officers make an unsuccessful attempt
to assassinate Hitler.
- Congress creates a new rank: General of the Army,
or five-star general, for Generals Eisenhower, Arnold,
MacArthur and Marshall.
