The stock market crashes

1929 — President Hoover meets with important businessmen at the White House in order to stabilize the nation’s business. The stock market crash brings depression, with unemployment and business failures.

Also that year:

  • Carver College of Chiropractic is founded in Oklahoma City, Okla.
  • U.S. envoys meet in Paris with the German Committee on Reparations to revise the Dawes Plan.
  • The Academy Awards, or Oscars, are presented for the first time to honor outstanding achievement in filmmaking. Emil Jannings with the Oscar for best actor, and Janet Gaynor wins for best actress.
  • Hubble measures the red shift and discovers that the galaxies are moving away from each other. This universal recession of galaxies indicates that the universe is expanding.
  • Arabs attack Jews in Palestine following a dispute about Jewish use of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
  • Amos ‘n’ Andy, a popular radio show heard weekdays through the 1930s, makes its national premiere.
  • The “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” takes place in Chicago. Six members of the notorious Moran gang are lined up against a garage wall and shot by a rival gang.
