1928 — Walt Disney releases the first Mickey
Mouse cartoon, Plane Crazy; he also produces
Steamboat Willie, the first animated film to use sound.
Elsewhere that year:
- Amelia Earhart is the first woman to fly across
the Atlantic.
- Sir Alexander Fleming, an English bacteriologist,
discovers penicillin, founding the field of antibiotic
therapy.
- The New York Times mounts the first
animated electric sign in the United States around
Times Building, Times Square, N.Y. is used to report
election returns, it is called the “zipper”
because of the way it encircles the building.
- Station WGY, Schenectady begins scheduled television
broadcasts.
- Congress appropriates $32 million to enforce
prohibition during the next year.
