The end of WWI

1919 — The Allies and Germany sign the Treaty of Versailles, ending World War I. The perpetual neutrality of Switzerland is also recognized in the treaty. President Wilson urges the establishment of the League of Nations at the Paris peace conference. A commission under Wilson drafts the League’s Covenant consisting of 26 articles.

Also that year:

  • Three chiropractic schools open in New York, N.Y.: Carver Chiropractic Institute, Columbia Institute of Chiropractic, and Standard School of Chiropractic.
  • Prohibition: The 18th Amendment is ratified, prohibiting the manufacture, sale, import and export of liquor in the United States. Bootleggers (illegal distillers and liquor sellers) immediately begin operations.
  • K. von Frisch determines that bees have a well-developed sense of smell and that they communicate with each other through body movements.
  • “Sir Barton” is the first horse to win the Triple Crown — the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes.
