Time zones

The United States is divided into four time zones — Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific — by the Interstate Commerce Commission.

Elsewhere that year:

  • The Supreme Court rules that conscription, or compulsory enrollment of men for military service, is authorized by the Constitution in Article I.
  • Robert Lee Ripley, cartoonist, begins his syndicated “Believe it or Not” series of strange and unusual facts.
  • Harlow Shapley determines that the Milky Way is about 100,000 light years in length. He also calculates that the Sun is about 30,000 light years from the center of the galaxy.
  • Daylight Savings Time goes into effect.
