1917 — President Wilson calls for a special
session of Congress. He signs a resolution declaring
war on Germany.
Elsewhere that year:
- Arkansas Chiropractic Association is founded.
- Revolution breaks out in Russia, forcing Czar
Nicolas II to abdicate. Revolutionaries, headed
by Aleksander Kerensky, set up a moderate government.
Bolsheviks, led by Leon Trotsky and Vladimir Lenin,
overthrow Kerensky’s government, seize power
in Russia and conclude an armistice with the Germans
on the Eastern Front.
- President Wilson severs diplomatic relations
with Germany on the same day the U.S. liner Housatonic
is sunk after it ignored warnings from a German
submarine.
- Congress adopts the 14th Amendment to the Constitution,
which outlaws the manufacture or sale of alcoholic
beverages. By this time, 29 states have Prohibition
laws. The amendment is to take effect in January
1920.
