U.S. Enters WWI

1917 — President Wilson calls for a special session of Congress. He signs a resolution declaring war on Germany.

Elsewhere that year:

  • Arkansas Chiropractic Association is founded.
  • Revolution breaks out in Russia, forcing Czar Nicolas II to abdicate. Revolutionaries, headed by Aleksander Kerensky, set up a moderate government. Bolsheviks, led by Leon Trotsky and Vladimir Lenin, overthrow Kerensky’s government, seize power in Russia and conclude an armistice with the Germans on the Eastern Front.
  • President Wilson severs diplomatic relations with Germany on the same day the U.S. liner Housatonic is sunk after it ignored warnings from a German submarine.
  • Congress adopts the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which outlaws the manufacture or sale of alcoholic beverages. By this time, 29 states have Prohibition laws. The amendment is to take effect in January 1920.
