1913 — Ford Motor Co. sets up the first moving
assembly line and is soon producing 1,000 Model Ts
per day. Ford pays workers an unheard-of minimum wage
of $5 a day and establishes a 40-hour workweek.
Elsewhere that year:
- Kansas is the first state to legalize the practice
of chiropractic, passing the first chiropractic
licensing law.
- Elmer McCollum, biochemist, isolates the vitamins
A and B. The Webb-Kenyon Interstate Liquor Act states
that liquor cannot be shipped into states where
the sale is illegal.
- New England poet Robert Frost publishes his first
book of poems, A Boy’s Will.
- Meades Ranch, Kansas is selected as the geodetic
center of North America.
- Johannes Fibiger, a Danish pathologist, causes
the growth of cancer cells in rats, a major breakthrough
in cancer research.
- Hollywood becomes the center of the motion-picture
industry, replacing New York City.
- Zippers, which have been in use since 1891, become
popular.
