The assembly line

1913 — Ford Motor Co. sets up the first moving assembly line and is soon producing 1,000 Model Ts per day. Ford pays workers an unheard-of minimum wage of $5 a day and establishes a 40-hour workweek.

Elsewhere that year:

  • Kansas is the first state to legalize the practice of chiropractic, passing the first chiropractic licensing law.
  • Elmer McCollum, biochemist, isolates the vitamins A and B. The Webb-Kenyon Interstate Liquor Act states that liquor cannot be shipped into states where the sale is illegal.
  • New England poet Robert Frost publishes his first book of poems, A Boy’s Will.
  • Meades Ranch, Kansas is selected as the geodetic center of North America.
  • Johannes Fibiger, a Danish pathologist, causes the growth of cancer cells in rats, a major breakthrough in cancer research.
  • Hollywood becomes the center of the motion-picture industry, replacing New York City.
  • Zippers, which have been in use since 1891, become popular.
