Application of the Antitrust Act

1911 — The U.S. Supreme Court, under the Sherman Antitrust Act, orders the dissolution of the Standard Oil Co. for unreasonable restraint of trade and the American Tobacco Co. for being a monopoly in 1911.

  • Los Angeles College of Chiropractic is chartered in the State of California.
  • Henry Bacon, architect, designs the Lincoln Memorial in the classical revival style.
  • The will of journalist Joseph Pulitzer calls for the establishment of the now-coveted Pulitzer Prizes.
  • Harry F. Reid, a seismologist, suggests that earthquakes are caused by movements of faults in the Earth’s crust.
  • The electric self-starter for automobile engines is demonstrated by General Motors. Invented by Clyde J. Coleman in 1899, it had been improved by Charles F. Kettering. With the new starter, it is no longer necessary to crank the engine to get it running.
