- Georges Claude, a French chemist, invents the
neon light.
- Father’s Day, started by Mrs. John B. Dodd,
is celebrated for the first time in Spokane, Wash.
- The first president to pitch a ball to open the
baseball season is William Howard Taft. He starts
the game between Washington and Philadelphia in
the American League.
- Congress require members of the House of Representatives
to file reports of campaign contributions.
