E=MC2

1905 — Albert Einstein, a German physicist, proposes the special theory of relativity and the equation E=MC2. In other papers, he explains Brownian movement and proposes the quantum theory of light to explain the photoelectric effect.

In other news:

  • Clarence McClung determines that females have XX sex chromosomes, while males have XY.
  • The first Rotary Club is founded in Chicago. Clubs consist of at least one member of each business or profession and meetings are held at each member’s office in rotation.
  • The number of registered automobiles rises to 77,988, compared to 300 ten years previously. Cars are still considered toys by most people.
