The Olympics

1904 — The Olympic Games are held for the first time in the United States as part of the World’s Fair in St. Louis. The United States wins 21 events.

Elsewhere that year:

  • Western States Chiropractic College is founded in Portland, Ore.
  • James M. Barrie publishes Peter Pan.
  • Diesel engines are brought to America.
  • Charles D. Perrine, astronomer, discovers the sixth moon of Jupiter.
  • The first section of the New York City subway begins service. The line later becomes the first subway to run underground and in underwater tunnels.
